Major Award Schemes for Companies

There is a small but growing number of award schemes to give recognition to the involvement of companies in community activity. Most are designed to publicise best practice and encourage more involvement.

EMPLOYEE AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

 

 

Employees in the Community Awards

 

 

These aim to recognise companies and organisations that support and encourage employees' involvement in the local community on a voluntary basis. Run by Action: Employees in the Community with sponsorship from GrandMet and the Voluntary Services Unit of the Home Office. The three categories - large company, small/medium sized company and public organisation - are judged on a regional then national basis, with an overall winner. Closing date October 10. Dragon Awards - The Lord Mayor of London's Awards for Business Involvement in the Community

 

 

The Dragon Awards highlight and recognise companies based in London which are helping towards the regeneration and employment opportunities of communities throughout the UK. Sponsored by the Corporation of London. Closing date for entries June. Presented in October. Contact Lucy MacNamara on 071 629 1600

 

 

ENVIRONMENT

 

 

Environmental reporting award

 

 

This annual award is run by ACCA to highlight good environmental practice and includes a Best New Entry award for smaller companies or those whose activities are not regarded as environmentally sensitive. RSA Environmental Management Award

 

 

This award seeks to promote good environmental practice by British management in pursuit of a more sustainable economy.

 

 

The Queen's Award for Environmental Achievement

 

 

This rewards the development of products, technology or processes which offer major benefits in environmental terms compared to existing ones. The award is granted only for projects that have achieved commercial success. Winners are then entered for the European Commission's European Better Environment Award for Industry. ARTS

 

 

ABSA/Arthur Andersen Awards in association with The Times

 

 

This is the main awards scheme recognising corporate arts sponsorship. It consists of ten categories, including a new award, Best Sponsorship in Kind. There are also three special awards, sponsored by Arthur Andersen, Guinness and The Times. Closing date September 16. Presented in December. Contact Jane Leslie on 071 378 8143

 

 

ABSA Scotland Awards

 

 

These awards are open to UK-wide companies who have sponsored the arts in Scotland and are sponsored by Scottish and Newcastle. Closing date February. Presented in May. Contact Peggy McLeod on 031 228 4262

 

 

ABSA Welsh Awards

 

 

Similar to the Scottish awards, these are sponsored by the Post Office, S4C and the Western Mail. Contact Guy Silk on 0222 221382

 

 

ABSA Goodman/Garrett Awards

 

 

These awards recognise personal achievement in the arts; the Goodman Award rewards voluntary effort and the Garrett Award professional achievement. They were sponsored last year by Reed Elsevier. Closing date end of March. Presented in May. Contact Marah Winn-Moon on 071 378 8143

 

 

EDUCATION

 

 

The Aim High Awards

 

 

Organised by BITC and sponsored by Pizzaland and the Sunday Express, the awards recognise and reward companies who work together with schools and colleges to raise student performance towards meeting the National Targets for Education and Training. Partnership Awards

Beacon Awards

 

 

These are new awards to recognise and encourage innovation and excellence in further education. Awards are sponsored by companies with an interest in a particular field. The 1994 Gardner Merchant Award for Excellence in Education Business Partnership

 

 

Run by Gardner Merchant in conjunction with the CBI, this rewards education-business partnerships with schools, special needs schools and further education/sixth-form colleges. Closing date mid-July. Presented in October. Contact Mr P J Collins on 081 763 1212

 

 

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

 

 

Employer of the Year Award

 

 

Organised by Parents at Work and sponsored by Reed Personnel Services, these encourage and recognise best practice in policies for working parents. COMMUNICATION

 

 

PR Week Best Corporate Community Involvement Campaign

 

 

The development of activity, evidence of success in building corporate reputation and enhancing company positioning are the factors taken into account in addition to tangible benefits for the community. Prince of Wales Award for Innovation

Community Enterprise Awards
