Supermarkets get blamed for everything from the disappearance of corner shops to the death of the family meal-time. Is this justified? Yes and no - but the accusations won't stop so long as the average adult spends 2% of their life in a supermarket. Retailing is one of the world's least globalised industries, but Tesco, Wal-Mart and Carrefour are going head-to-head to capture the emerging markets of Eastern Europe and Asia. Modern retailing brings a social transformation that affects producers, distribution, and the lifestyles of consumers. The winners and losers from the 'supermarket wars' aren't clear, but CSR is a key part of the battleground.
